The biggest problem with this book is how 1 to 2 dimensional most of the characters are. However the characters, world building, and overall sense of purpose is really lacking. It moves a little slow in parts, tending to not progress anywhere fast (the second part of the book is basically just one huge dungeon crawl), but that's not necessarily a bad thing as long as you're aware of it. Well written, the book is perfect for audio - great narrator, not too many stats (but enough) and a fun story. After the first few chapters though it forges its own path. The start reminded me very strongly of the very excellent book 'Threadbare' - the MC is a summons who is new to the world, naïve to it's dangers, and must learn it's ropes. Despite not having litrpg or gamelit anywhere in the title, this book very firmly falls within the genre.

There are a number of successes that Weston Ochse manages to bring to Age of Blood to make it a compelling book. Before you know it we’re dealing with drug gangs, werewolves and ancient powers. To make things worse the senator in question holds the purse strings for 666’s funding. In the first book we have an idea as to why the sniper Walker was picked for the team and in this story we get some insight into the others.Īge of Blood kicks off when a sea monster grabs a senator’s daughter and then escalates from there. We dabble a little more into the mythos – not on the monster side, but on the SEAL and US Navy side. Ochse’ writing is just as tight and clear but the story feels more confident. This isn’t just because I know the characters. I enjoyed Seal Team 666 and I liked the sequel even more. Age of Blood picks up in the aftermath, with some loose ends and a whole new challenge. The first book introduced some new SEALs to Team 666 – the US’s special squad that’s deployed against supernatural threats in a particularly high stakes battle. The first book in the series is just called Seal Team 666 and with Seal Team 666: Age of Blood author Weston Ochse has extended the story. We are introduced to Angie Mitchell, a cyberspace celebrity with the rare talent of being able to enter that virtual world without jacking in physically. He offers four wildly disparate story threads, each with its own protagonist, and allows them slowly to graft themselves together as organically as he can. In fact he's having fun taking his time, defying conventions of plot development. But you're never really wasting your time watching a genius at play, even when he drops the ball.įor most of the book, it seems as if Gibson is steadfastly and infuriatingly avoiding establishing a plot. In all honesty it doesn't fully work, and Mona Lisa Overdrive remains Gibson's least artistically successful story to date. Yet it's a testament to Gibson's still fecund talents that much of its entertainment value lies in wanting to solve it. The resulting story is a hell of a mess, a convoluted literary Rubik's Cube whose sides stubbornly refuse to match up no matter how much you play with it. So he sets about here trying to push his own envelopes and cut his own edges. A direct sequel to Neuromancer, Mona Lisa Overdrive shows William Gibson perhaps a bit too self-conscious of his stature as a leading SF superstar from whom great things are now routinely expected. Some of his manga have been based on his life and its events for example his grandfather was a real life Yakuza and his father used to be a pig farmer with a spider tattoo on his back. Hino has claimed that he was nearly killed en route to Japan by his fellow townspeople during the evacuation from China. His family had no choice but to escape to Japan before being lynched by Chinese civilians, so his town gathered up everybody and started to make their move to the remaining internationally governed harbours. Hideshi Hino was born in China to Japanese immigrant workers in Manchuria just when Japan surrendered at the end of Second Sino-Japanese War and the vengeful anti-Japanese movement in China was taking place. He also wrote and directed two of the Guineapig horror movies which were based on his manga: Flower of Flesh and Blood, which he also starred in, and Mermaid in a Manhole. His comics include Hell Baby, Hino Horrors, and Panorama of Hell. Hideshi Hino is a manga artist who specializes in horror stories. Sir Roger Scruton was a writer and philosopher who has published more than forty books in philosophy, aesthetics and politics. Writing with great clarity, Scruton delivers a devastating critique of modern left-wing thinking. Can there be any foundation for resistance to the leftist agenda without religious faith? In Fools, Frauds and Firebrands Scruton asks, What does the Left look like today, and how has it evolved? He charts the transfer of grievances, from the working class to women, gays, and immigrants, asks what we can put in the place of radical egalitarianism, and what explains the continued dominance of antinomian attitudes in the intellectual world. In addition to assessments of these thinkers' philosophical and political contributions, the book contains a biographical and bibliographical section summarizing their careers and most important writings. Laing, Jurgen Habermas, Gyorgy Lukacs, Jean-Paul Sartre, Jacques Derrida, Slavoj Žižek, Ralph Milliband, and Eric Hobsbawm. Beginning with a ruthless analysis of New Leftism and concluding with a critique of the key strands in its thinking, Roger Scruton conducts a reappraisal of such major left-wing thinkers as E.
